On October 7th, 2024, over 1,500 community members and leaders gathered on the first anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks last year to honor the lives lost, reflect on our solidarity with Israel, and pray for a peaceful future, which is a testament to how we remain united even during the toughest times. With collaboration and support of many local organizations and agencies, JFGD joined over 130 Federation-led commemorations held across North America, and together, we made our voices heard. We told the world that we would not forget the atrocities that took place one year ago, and that we will continue to move forward and strive towards eradicating antisemitism and hatred of all kinds. Our story was amplified through local media attention, and we will continue to tell our story and advocate for our community.

Our event featured interfaith clergy, civic leaders, allies of the Jewish community, and a significant message of solidarity from President George W. Bush. Governor Greg Abbott spoke, reaffirming that Texas stands with Israel, and he precedingly issued a proclamation that declared October 7th as Israel Commemoration Day in the Lonestar State.

The Consul General of Israel to the Southwest Livia Link-Raviv reminded us of the importance of renewing our commitment to Israel, stating that “as hard as it is here, it is so much harder at home,” in Israel. The personal testimonies of LeElle Slifer – a Dallasite whose family was murdered by Hamas – and Koby Pode – a resident of Kibbutz Zikim in Israel – who held off terrorists as they attempted to invade his community, moved and inspired us.

Also in attendance were elected officials including U.S. Representatives Colin Allred and Marc Veasey, State Senators Phil King and Tan Parker, State Representative Julie Johnson, Dallas City Council Members Cara Mendelsohn, Paul Ridley, Jaynie Schultz and Gay Donnell Willis, as well as staff representing Senator John Cornyn, State Representative Mihaela Plesa, and Dallas City Council Member Chad West. We greatly appreciate their presence and support for Israel and the Jewish community.

During this time, when our resilience is tested, our community must continue to come together to speak out against antisemitism and continue to raise awareness and advocate for the release of the hostages. We must bring them home now. Together, we can make an impact.
