PEI continues to offer resources and guides for accurate, fair, balanced, and unbiased teaching about Jews, Judaism, Israel, and Jewish contributions to Western civilization.

The Public Education Initiative’s TEKS-aligned GUIDES offer educators accurate resources for teaching about Jews, Judaism, Israel, Jewish contributions to Western Civilization, and religious diversity. These GUIDES cite specific teaching standards and offer topic-specific resources developed by the Jewish educational scholars at the Institute for Curriculum Services (ICS). Teaching Diversity provides a comprehensive list of K-12 standards that reference Jews, Judaism, and Israel; religious and cultural diversity; and the impact of diverse groups on history, government, law, and geography. These standards are aligned with accurate resources that help teachers develop high quality lesson plans and curricula. The resources are free and may be accessed at the ICS website.

De-Mystifying Religion was originally developed for CSCOPE professionals writing curriculum for the Educational Service Centers throughout the State of Texas. This document selects specific TEKS that reference Jews, Judaism, and Israel as well as those that reference specific contributions by Jews and Judaism to culture, government, and law. It then provides specific content for those standards as well as suggestions for additional resources.

TEKS (19) Culture: Diversity Within Unity:The Texas Cultural Experience
Teaching How Different Immigrant Groups Have Impacted – and Been Impacted By – Texas Culture
TEK (c)(19) Culture requires students to explore the impact of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious groups on the Texas culture. It serves as an excellent “umbrella” for reinforcing multiple standards in other strands as multiple immigrant groups greatly impacted Texas culture.
The lesson plan was developed collaboratively by Texas History curriculum writer Beth Hudson (Austin ISD), Dr. Bryan Stone, author of The Chosen Folks: Jews on the Frontiers of Texas; and PEI professionals. It utilizes standards in multiple strands, e.g., religious freedom; frontier expansion, cattle, oil, and railroad industries; and civil rights, to explore the impact made to and on Texas by multiple unique racial, ethnic, and religious immigrant groups, e.g., African-Americans, Czechs, Germans, French, Jews, and Vietnamese. Resources about the Jewish experience are provided as examples.
